I would have never thought to give pastels a second look, but once I used them, I was hooked. This type of medium is soft and also comes in extra soft, which blends like literal butter. These are fragile becuase they are pigmented, so if a piece breaks or slivers off, it is still usable. You can use your fingers to blend, but you can also choose a blending stump, which is rolled-up paper with a point to blend small details. You can also use cotton swabs, soft brushes, or anything else you find around the house that will do the job. I should warn you that this medium is very dusty. I recommend a mask for indoor use, and it will stain carpet, so choose your working space carefully. I prefer this medium outdoors.

Artist tip: You will need to purchase a pastel paper or a pad separately, but here is a starving artist trick; Go to your local supermarket and purchase brown bags whihc is very inexpensive (approx. <.15 cents per bag) and cut them to size. They can double as paster paper.
